The MSF Festival

Doctors Without Borders India / Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and Alliance Française de Delhi present a ten day festival that highlights the emergency medical humanitarian aid work MSF provides to victims of forgotten epidemics, armed conflicts and natural disasters.

Walk through a series of photographs by Sami Siva on MSF’s projects in India. Documenting the daily lives of patients and the conditions in which they find themselves, these images showcase a compassionate yet unflinching portrait of healthcare on the margins in a country where several realities coexist.

Join our film festival over the weekend and explore the hows and whys of MSF’s long term work – emergency medical relief, campaigns for the access to essential medicine, and upholding the organisation’s humanitarian principles in the face of security risks. Screenings include the Sundance-nominated Fire in the Blood and The Invisibles, produced by Javier Bardem.

Friday, 29 Aug                   7:00 pm – 9:00 pm            Access to the Danger Zone           70 mins

Directed by Peter Casaer and narrated by Daniel Day-Lewis, this documentary provides a harrowing look at the challenges of delivering humanitarian aid in armed conflicts. Access to the Danger Zone explores the strategies that Doctors Without Borders uses to save lives in the world’s worst war zones, including Afghanistan, Somalia, and eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

Saturday, 30 Aug              7:00 pm – 9:00 pm            Invisibles                     95 mins

A film with five stories, Invisibles is about those we do not want to see, but who end up appearing inside our fears and our unease, among other things, because they never stop existing. They are displaced people in Colombia, child soldiers in Uganda, and victims of Chagas disease, Sleeping Sickness, and sexual violence against civilians in the Democratic Republic of Congo. All of these stories belong to some of the forgotten crises where MSF works permanently.

Sunday, 31 Aug                 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm            MSF (Un)Limited                              52 mins

Moving accounts of atrocities and humanitarian crises since the founding of MSF in 1971 are told using original footage with commentary by MSF staff. Staff are shown wrestling with their consciences, struggling with emotional involvement and receiving threats to their personal security. MSF (Un)Limited is a story of the ongoing internal debate and self-questioning by MSF when faced with the limits of humanitarian action.

Sunday, 31 Aug                 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm            Fire in the Blood                87 mins

An intricate tale of ‘medicine, monopoly and malice’, Fire in the Blood tells the story of how Western pharmaceutical companies and governments aggressively blocked access to low-cost AIDS drugs for the countries of Africa and the global south in the years after 1996, causing ten million or more unnecessary deaths. Shot on four continents and including contributions from global figures such as Bill Clinton, Desmond Tutu and Joseph Stiglitz, this is the never-before-told true story of the remarkable coalition which came together to stop ‘the Crime of the Century’ and save millions of lives in the process.
