“We heard loud explosions”: MSF medics respond after attack on Kherson, Ukraine

Following a Russian military attack on Kherson city on 24 October, MSF doctors received seven patients with blast and shrapnel injuries at the hospital we support in the city. The strikes reportedly killed two people and injured at least 28.

We heard loud explosions, the hospital windows were shaking — it was clear a powerful blast wave had hit. Among the wounded were two teenage girls, aged 15 and 17, who suffered concussions. We stabilised them and referred them to a specialised paediatric facility for further care.

Patients reported that the attack occurred as children were heading to school and adults to work. The strikes hit a densely populated area, with fragments damaging a public transport stop where a bus was waiting, injuring several passengers.

The rules of war have been broken yet again. Civilians are once again the victims of an attack - we must not allow ourselves to become used to this.

MSF supports the hospital in Kherson with a team including an ER doctor, anaesthesiologists, a trauma surgeon and a feldsher. The city remains under constant bombardment, and people often arrive for treatment days after an attack due to ongoing insecurity and limited access to medical care — we fear that the true number of wounded from this attack could be higher.
