Background

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) / Doctors Without Borders India (DWBI) is an international humanitarian medical aid organization working in more than 70 countries worldwide. Our teams provide emergency medical assistance to people in need, irrespective of their nationality, race or religion. In 1999 MSF was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize as recognition for its medical work in several continents.

Purpose of Post

Providing proper triage, nursing care, treatment and follow-up of patients, according to doctors ‘prescriptions, protocols applied in service and universal hygiene standards/precautions, in order to ensure the quality and continuity of care for the targeted population.

Supporting the drug supply management in the designated facilities and ensuring general functioning of the pharmacy and the medical stock under the supervision of the PMR/MAM and according to DWBI/MSF health policies and protocols, in order to contribute in the guarantee of the proper management and distribution of drugs and medical devices.

Functional and Hierarchical Lines

Hierarchically accountable to – IEC/HP Activity Manager and Project Medical Referent (PMR) /Medical Activity Manager (MAM)

Accountabilities

  • Knowing, promoting, implementing and following up the universal hygiene standards/ precautions, bio-hazard prevention and infection control, security rules and other protocols and procedures in the medical premises and ensuring high standards of hygiene of his/her working environment. Respecting medical secrets and confidentiality at all times.
  • Organizing and carrying out care and treatments according to medical prescriptions, and assisting during consultations, timely follow-ups and other medical procedures. Participating in health education of the patient (and family) when necessary.
  • Ensuring patients are properly triaged and directed to the designated expert i.e. An MD/MH counselor/Social worker and that those with lack of autonomy are assisted, For ER and OPD nurse, ensuring triage of patients in waiting areas, wards or during emergencies, detecting the priority acute/emergency cases, carrying out first aid care and referring them to the doctor when necessary
  • Performing and monitoring sterilization, autoclave and BWM of medical equipment’s Carrying out admission, surveillance and follow-up of patients to check adherence and state of health and timely identification of any emergency situation or deterioration of any clinic patient
  • Following up to check adherence and state of health and the identification of any emergency situation or deterioration
  • Carrying and supervising administrative procedures and documents (fill in patient’s files, forms, consumptions, statistics, registers, health files, etc.), ensuring an appropriate written/oral handover, and reporting any problematic situations and cases that may arise. Participating in data collection and keeping doctors/supervisors informed.
  • Perform cleaning and minor maintenance of biomedical equipment used. Following the user manual, protocols, and alert supervisor in case of malfunctioning.
  • Supervising and training nurse-aids, nutritional assistants, cleaners and other related staff under his/her supervision, ensuring teamwork and adherence to all appropriate protocols and procedures
  • To be able to work in collaboration with other team members in order to achieve the overall project objectives.
  • To be keen on participating in any internal/external training to enhance project related knowledge

Context Specific Accountabilities

Community Outreach

  • Under the line management of the IEC/HP Manager for day-to-day activities and the PMR/MAM for paramedical content and analysis:
  • Conduct the mapping (geographic location, staffing, care provided therewith) of listed Primary Health Care centers (dispensaries, Mohalla clinics, maternity clinics) in the Blocks targeted by the project in its catchment area.
  • Assist the HCHW team in their day-to-day liaison and relationship with ANM and MOIC of Dispensaries) for patient referral and identification purposes.
  • Participate in awareness Sessions conducted by the IEC/HP team in Dispensaries and Mohalla Clinic of target blocks as well as the project’s Community Room.
  • Participate actively in training, monthly ASHA Meeting conducted by the government dispensaries and various capacity building exercises conducted by the project in Primary Health Care Centers.
  • Regularly monitor the evolution of number of SGBV survivors:
    • Referred to PHCs for specific SGBV care;
    • Referred from PHCs to UKK clinic for care;
    • Coordinate with different department of the BJRMH and seek the referral.
  • Communicate any and all needs expressed by PHCs towards DWBI for support (training, capacitation, psycho-education, awareness, material, etc.).

Nursing care at UKK clinic

  • To be able to easily identify Sexually Gender Based Violence victims at the time of triage and then referring them to the relevant clinic team so they can receive the necessary treatment/ care.
  • To have optimum knowledge and awareness of the importance and appropriate use of the Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) Kit.
  • To provide optimal nursing care to the patients in the clinic
  • To be available and ready to cover shifts as a regular nurse at UKK clinic when needed.
  • To be willing to participate in any emergency response taken up by the project team locally or outside the work station when required.
  • Identifying Sexually Gender Based Violence victims and referring them to the relevant team so they can receive the necessary treatment/ care. Knowing and is aware of the importance and appropriate use of the Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) Kit.
  • To participate in any on the job trainings.

Pharmacy Management

  • Sharing the list of drugs received by BFO with nurses/ MAM/PMR. To support BFO in sharing drugs received with nurses/PMR/MAM, in storage, classification and organization of drugs during stock count and to update MSR.
  • Ensuring efficient management of medical stock depending on drug consumption done or previewed in both pharmacies
  • To support nurses in monthly physical inventories of clinic pharmacy stock and compile reports of the same.
  • To ensure timely and adequate management of internal request Identify possible medical stock rupture
  • Ensure identification and removal of expired drugs from project pharmacy and share list to Log for monthly disposal
  • Support nurses in pharmacy related on the job trainings
  • Compiling records of all drugs dispensed with reference to standard stock and monthly consumption tool.
  • Preparing the monthly Pharmacy reports and participate in monthly TSR analysis/ med-log meeting. Follow up with log and supply department regarding loan/donation, urgent orders and pipeline. Monthly reporting to PMR/MAM.
  • Actively participate in six monthly medical order cycle activities including FMC-MSL revision and periodically update, analysis of the same. Identify physically available stock and missing items, analyzing six monthly medical order TSR and PO with PMR/MAM
  • Any unusual or unexplained consumption or use of drugs with support of nurses
  • Any problems that might be linked to work of pharmacy staff as well as problematic equipment or material (ex. broken, missing).

Requirements

Education

  • Essential: certification as a GNM allowed to practice in India.
  • Desirable Bachelor in Science of Nursing

Experience

  • Desirable 2 years of previous experience with DWBI, specifically with SGBV survivors
  • Demonstrable experience in others in a team setting
