Background

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)/Doctors Without Borders India (DWBI) is an international humanitarian medical aid organization working in more than 70 countries worldwide. Médecins Sans Frontiers is neutral, impartial, independent, and not linked to any political party or governmental body. Our teams provide emergency medical assistance to people in need, irrespective of their nationality, race or religion.

In 1999 MSF was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition for its medical work in several continents.

Purpose of Post

  • Contributing to the implementation of operational communication strategy in the mission according to DWBI standards.
  • Aiming at building DWBI visibility, acceptance and leverage inside the country.
  • Focusing on media alert, local media management and content diffusion.
  • To work in close collaboration with the MSF-South Asia (SA) Communications team to achieve all the objectives.

Functional and Hierarchical Lines

Accountabilities

Media Management

  • Under the supervision of the Project Coordinator and in continuous collaboration with MSF-SA communications team, the FCO establishes and maintains regular relations with key local media contacts (journalists, bloggers, photographers, and camera-men, in the project’s catchment area).
  • He/ She/ They will handle local media requests and contact local media proactively to pitch DWBI and SGBV project
  • He/She/They organize events for local media (Press conference, Press briefing, etc.)

Media Alert

  • The FCO monitors local media and flags significant articles, trends, news or reports of importance for the project to PC
  • He/she/ they produce strategic reports on the local media landscape (key media, audience numbers, political affiliation, ownership, freedom of speech, use of social media) and regularly reports on new developments.
  • He/she/they provide guidance on how to deal with local media at times of crisis.

Content Diffusion

  • The FCO implements the diffusion of decided project-related content in the catchment area and beyond, depending on the extent and operational decision, in local languages and among local media. If judged applicable, he/ she/they use social media (Twitter, blogs, Facebook….) to promote this content.

Content Production

  • The FCO collaborates with MSF-SA Comms for the production of local communication tools and products (leaflets, brochures, posters, radio spots, articles, photos, videos) according to local strategy and budget with close collaboration with MSF-SA communications team
  • In particular, he/she/they will help identify the right communications tools and will adapt/translate communications materials to targeted local audiences.

Internal Communication

  • When applicable the FCO will provide communication training to other project staff.

Reporting

  • The FCO will participate in communication data-collection and reporting to PC and Media team in MSF-SA as and when required.

Context Specific Accountabilities

Liaison and coordination with MSF-South Asia Communications Department

  • The FCO is SGBV project’s key point of contact and sparring partner with MSF-SA Coms for the creation of digital content, organization of media and external communications activities, as well as joint campaigns and social media activities.
  • The FCO works closely with the Project Coordinator for validation of media content and activity to ensure that content does not translate into operational risks for the project and the organization.
  • The FCO is responsible to mobilize the project’s staff and ensure their involvement in content production and experience sharing at the project level.

Definition of a Communications Framework for SGBV project

In close collaboration with MSF-SA Coms and DWBI Operations, the FCO is expected to:

  • Develop a coms framework inclusive of Q&As and communications lines for the project, which have to be coherent with the organization’s national rules and approach as well as the project’s key messaging.
  • Assist the Advocacy Manager with and participate to the design of the project’s Advocacy Strategy.

Digital and social media platforms setup and management for SGBV project

In liaison with MSF-SA Coms and the Project Coordinator, the FCO is expected to:

  • Engage external social platforms for the SGBV project’s message to be discussed and shared by other influencers.
  • Continuously develop and update the project’s already existing website.
  • Setup and maintain cross-platform social media coherence, ensuring consistency of wording, tone, content, imagery and branding between platforms.

Virtual community engagement and management

  •  Liaise with, advise and proactively include project staff in the creation of content and virtual community engagement, especially the medical team (doctors, nurses and counsellors) for topics requiring their expertise.
  • Produce content, reply to posts and actively, continuously enagage the project’s platforms’ subscribers and followers on the topic of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence.

Translation of social media variables and data into operational KPIs, objectives and indicators

  • Analyze key social media variables (clout, trends, engagement rate, etc.) and support Operations with their translation into measurable indicators of progress for SGBV project in general.

Requirements

Education

  • Essential: University diploma (any) in Digital Marketing and Social Media, and/or degree in Public Relations, Journalism, Communications or related university degree.

Experience

  • Essential: Previous experience of at least two years in social media management/influencing, communications, journalism or public relations in India.

Languages

  • Excellent command of English (written and spoken) and Hindi (written and spoken), essential and required.

Knowledge

  • Excellent writing skills. Thorough knowledge of social media and a good understanding of mainstream media. Good networking and media relations skills.
  • Essential computer literacy (word, excel and internet) Outgoing personality, good balance between initiative and working in a team.

  • 18 days annual leave; 12 days paid leave as per the specified list of holidays; Sick/Casual leave of 12 days as per calendar year (pro-rated based on hire date).
