MSF opens treatment centre for survivors of sexual and gender based violence

Jahangirpuri (Delhi), November 5, 2015 – The international medical humanitarian organisation, Doctors Without Borders/ Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), inaugurated a treatment centre for survivors of sexual and gender based violence, today in New Delhi. MSF SGBV clinic located at Mahendra Park, Jahangirpuri (North District, Delhi) will provide medical assistance to the survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence, including children.

The clinic aims to increase access to quality treatment for survivors of sexual assault who may develop medical and psychological complications. The medical services entail treatment of physical injuries, prevention of HIV/AIDS, unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections and counselling for severe psychological problems. The team will also raise awareness within the communities on the importance of timely medical and psychological care through health education and outreach activities.

MSF SGBV clinic will offer services in a friendly, confidential and unbiased manner and ensure a safe environment, complying with the Ministry of Health (MoH) guidelines. A team of doctors, nurses and counsellors will be available round the clock to provide free emergency services and referrals to patients for other relevant services as per requirement (tertiary care, legal, shelter etc.).

“Sexual assault, domestic violence, child abuse are all medical emergencies. As sexual violence affects millions of people across the world, MSF acknowledges a responsibility to respond to the medical needs of the most affected communities. The opening of MSF SGBV clinic in Jahangirpuri is a step towards sensitising the community on the need to recognise sexual violence as a medical emergency and provision of required immediate attention. Treating sexual and gender-based violence is a demonstration of our commitment to provide quality healthcare in some of the most vulnerable communities.” says Magali Roudaut, MSF Director in India.
